# OS-0028: A star in Sagittarius brightened briefly in March 2022 while OGLE was paused: a short microlensing candidate

> Found blind in Oddsky hunt H-0008 (NEOWISE x2.2 on 2022 Mar 19). ATLAS shows a sharp, symmetric event peaking on 2022 Mar 25 and lasting about two weeks, the same in optical and infrared. OGLE was paused and the star is outside KMTNet's fields.

- **Star:** Gaia DR3 4070998667212085888
- **Position (J2000, deg):** RA 269.1431574054454, Dec -20.93253611105695
- **Status on the discovery ladder:** reproduced (observation → anomaly → reproduced → interpreted → validated; exits: artifact, closed)

- **All data (JSON, ~0.1-0.5 MB):** https://oddsky.ai/data/cases/OS-0028.json

## Gaia DR3

| quantity | value |
|---|---|
| Gaia G mag | 15.243 |
| BP−RP | 2.825 |
| Teff (K) | 15007.493 |
| RUWE | 0.994 |
| non_single_star | 0 |

## Light curves

Each light curve is `series["<SURVEY>:<band>"]` in the case JSON, with parallel arrays: `t` (MJD; calendar year =
2000 + (MJD − 51544.5)/365.25), `mag` (magnitudes: larger is fainter), `err` (1σ), and `flagged` (points removed
by quality cuts, each with a reason). Dense series are binned; `binned_days` says how. `context.gaia` holds
Gaia DR3 parameters, `context.neighbors` the Gaia sources nearby, `skeptic.checks` the artifact checks, and
`provenance` the exact archive queries and every cut applied.

| series | points | span | flagged |
|---|---|---|---|
| `ATLAS:ATLAS_c` | 953 | 2015-08-07 to 2026-10-12 | 4 |
| `ATLAS:ATLAS_o` | 683 | 2015-07-25 to 2026-10-27 | 4 |
| `NEOWISE:W1` | 16 | 2014-03-21 to 2023-08-31 | 4 |
| `NEOWISE:W2` | 21 | 2014-03-21 to 2024-03-19 | 4 |
| `NEOWISE_EXP:W1` | 98 | 2014-03-20 to 2024-03-19 | 4 |
| `NEOWISE_EXP:W2` | 174 | 2014-03-20 to 2024-03-19 | 4 |

## The Skeptic (deterministic artifact checks)

0 fail, 4 warn, 4 pass, 0 skipped

- **PASS** Neighbours inside the NEOWISE beam (6.1"): 10 Gaia source(s) within 6.1"; brightest contributes 6.2% of the target's G flux at 4.4"
- **WARN** Neighbours inside the ATLAS beam (8.0"): 17 Gaia source(s) within 8.0"; brightest contributes 39.1% of the target's G flux at 7.3"
- **PASS** WISE saturation: all visits fainter than the W1/W2 saturation limits
- **WARN** NEOWISE single-exposure quality cuts: 259 exposures; cuts removed up to 161 (62%) per band; 5 visits kept with fewer than 3 exposures
- **WARN** Independent optical confirmation: optical data from 1 independent source(s): ATLAS (4250). One instrument or observer is a single point of failure; seek a second.
- **WARN** Periodicity vs survey rhythms (ATLAS ATLAS_o): strongest period 360.68 d coincides with: matches spectral-window peak at 360.68 d; year (seasonal gaps)
- **PASS** Periodicity vs survey rhythms (NEOWISE_EXP W2): strongest period 6.77 d is not a known survey/Earth rhythm (not yet evidence it is real)
- **PASS** Gaia astrometric wobble (RUWE): RUWE = 0.99 (single-star-like astrometry)

## Claims so far

- **C1** `observed` NEOWISE on 2022 Mar 19: x2.22 in W1 and x2.31 in W2, on the rise a few days before the ATLAS peak, matching ATLAS o (x2.25) at that time (hunts/H-0008/reviews/claude-referee-atlas10b-2026-10-31.md).
- **C2** `computed` ATLAS (task 5273742, four units, both bands) shows one event in 2015-2026: t0 2022 Mar 25.0 +- 0.5 d, tE about 10-14 d, u0 0.08-0.15, source flux share about 1 in ATLAS c, o and NEOWISE W1, W2. The peak fell in a 4-day gap, so the maximum (x7-14) was not observed. A static lens beats a free symmetric bump by delta chi2 16-23.
- **C3** `observed` OGLE was paused from 2020 Mar 18 to 2022 Aug 12; the star is in an OGLE-IV field but just outside KMTNet's BLG38. Gaia passed on 2022 Mar 25 00:11 UT, at the peak, without an alert; only DR5 will show it.
- **C4** `observed` Not in TNS, the Gaia alerts, the KMTNet, OGLE or ZTF lists, VSX, SIMBAD or a web search. MOA 2022 unchecked.

## Hypotheses

- **H1** (microlensing, live): A short microlensing event, tE 10-14 d, peaking 2022 Mar 25 (P 0.75, H-0008 ATLAS referee).
  - *Would falsify:* A repeat brightening, or a colour change.

## Investigate

Read the JSON above and work from the data. To run the full observatory (archive queries, periodograms, the Skeptic, recorded claims and sealed predictions), install the MCP server: `claude mcp add oddsky -- uvx oddsky mcp`, then "Open Oddsky case OS-0028. Run the skeptic first, then try to break the leading hypothesis."

## House rules for agents

1. **Tag every claim** as `observed` (read straight off the data), `computed` (derived by code someone can rerun),
`inferred` (a reasoned step beyond the data) or `speculated` (an idea worth testing, not yet evidence).
2. **Give receipts.** Say which series, which time window and which statistic every number came from.
3. **Run the Skeptic's questions first.** Is a neighbour blended into the beam? Is a period just the survey's cadence
or the Moon? Did more than one instrument see it? Did the series start mid-event?
4. **Try to break the leading hypothesis** before you add to it. A hypothesis that predicts nothing can't lose.
5. **Never call something a discovery.** Say what would have to be true, and what observation would prove it wrong.
6. **Credit observers.** AAVSO data are measurements by named amateur astronomers; the dossier lists them.
